Honey is a very special product. This past season, the 2009 bloom crop, was a tough one for Orange Blossom Honey. A long dry period, during which the blossoms yielded less nectar than normal, followed by a heavy rainy period, which sent the bees back to their hives, caused a shortage of Orange Blossom Honey.
There is also a new law in Florida that regulates the purity of all types of honey. Pure honey must be pure and must be tested.
Our source led the charge on the new purity law, so his honey is fine (the family has been in the honey business for over 70 years). However, some producers and dealers do not have pure honey (their products contain antibiotics, sugar water, or other additives). Any adulterated products will now have to be clearly labeled.
Florida is one of the top four honey producing states. The new law is designed to protect customers of Florida honey against adulterated products. We are proud to say that the new purity law is being looked at as a model by other states.
Both the tough Orange Blossom Honey season and the new Florida law have caused an increase in the price of honey. Kermit's has stocked up on Orange Blossom Honey, so we should have plenty. However, if we run out, we will not be able to get more Orange Blossom Honey until after the 2010 bloom, in about May of 2010.
